As a beginner, I found the grey cloth to be easy to work with. It's a fantastic choice for anyone new to tufting. recommend

I tried monks cloth from Joanns and it was horrible for tufting, this stretched right, no tears. This was my first time tufting and did a whole rug without a single issue.

Solid pair of duck bill scissors
They are easy to use. They are not huge and not heavy but they are of a sturdy weight. These are a very good pair of duckbilled scissors.
